Stirring First Birthday Concert finishes in the Mirrored Bawtree Hall with goosebumps! Did you see the goblins?

March 23, 2016

On Sunday 19th March the North Downs Community Orchestra filled the new Bawtree Hall at Hazelwood School, Limpsfield, with their wonderful music, conducted by Shona Fenion, a professional violinist from the local area.

The concert marked the first birthday of this inclusive amateur orchestra, which was founded to give a musical home to local musicians of any ability, whether learners, maestros, or the rather rusty. The repertoire included many well-known classical pieces, such as Pomp and Circumstance March No.4. and Toreador’s Song from Carmen Suite No.2.

A special highlight of the event was the performance of ‘Something’s Stirring on Godstone Green’, composed especially for the fun orchestra by Nick Drewe, from Maidstone. His inspiration came from visiting the orchestra at the Endeavor Scout HQ at Godstone Green. This idyllic setting prompted thoughts of day-breaking and activity unfolding and he could “almost hear the music being played to him”.

The programme was rounded off with a magical, rousing rendition of In the Hall of the Mountain King.

The orchestra gratefully received a grant from the Hazelwood School Community Fund to facilitate orchestral sectional rehearsals (for string and wind instruments) led by Shona Fenion and professional trombonist, Richard Cross.

The orchestra would welcome new members, whatever their experience and ability.  Those who play a suitable musical instrument may come along to orchestra or band rehearsals – string and brass players are particularly welcome for the orchestra currently.
