August 6, 2019

Sara Young appointed as Musical Director of NDCO!

The North Downs Community Orchestra is very pleased to announce the appointment of Sara Young as our new Musical Director and conductor.

Sara’s musical career began when she started learning the violin aged 6.  She was awarded a Junior Exhibition at the Royal College of Music before undertaking academic studies at Oxford University where she also played in many chamber groups and orchestras.

Following success in IT in the City, Sara has played in and led many orchestras, and taught music at several schools and colleges, culminating in 18 years at Hazelwood School in Limpsfield, one of our favourite concert venues.

After conducting the NDCO Summer Prom concert in June, members of the Orchestra were delighted to ask Sara to become our new Musical Director, which she has accepted.  Sara has already been planning our future repertoire up to a year ahead and is looking forward to working with Richard Cross who will continue to rehearse our wind section and be Principal Guest Conductor.

Sara Young, commenting on her new appointment, said, ‘I am absolutely delighted to be appointed as Musical Director of the North Downs Community Orchestra and am looking forward to a bright and fun filled future of collaborative music making!’

Pam Deverill, Chairman of the Orchestra which has just become a Registered Charity, said, ‘Members of the NDCO really enjoyed working with Sara for our Summer Prom concert.  It was such fun to play together.  We are looking forward to playing our new repertoire next term and at our next Concert at St John’s church, Hurst Green on Saturday 30 November’.

Richard Cross appointed as our Principal Guest Conductor.
