NDCO Band & Ensembles
North Downs Community Orchestra hosts various small groups within our membership, most notably the North Downs Band and the Percussion Project. Woodwind and strings ensembles also materialize from time to time, and all members are encouraged to participate in and initiate smaller playing groups as they wish.
NORTH DOWNS BAND
The North Downs Band has been set up by NDCO to provide a fun musical home for musicians whatever their instrument. So if you want to play in a music group but don't play an orchestral instrument, then the North Downs Band is the perfect band for you. Just like the NDCO, the band does not require members to have achieved certain grades and does not hold auditions. If you can play your instrument at a basic level ("Three Blind Mice" will suffice!), then you are most welcome to join us.
The North Downs Band usually rehearses on 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month, from 7:30pm - 9:30pm, at Godstone Scout Headquarters, Endeavour, The Green, Godstone, RH9 8DY. The repertoire is decided by the members and includes film and typical band music. Your first rehearsal is free. If you wish to join us, dues are £5.00 per rehearsal as and when you can make it.
Dave Ellis, one of the founders of the NDCO, leads the North Downs Band. Please get in touch via our contact form if you would like to join the North Downs band.
THE PERCUSSION PROJECT
The Percussion Project started as an initiative to develop our orchestral percussion section. With the help of a grant from the Hazelwood School Community Fund, we put on some introductory opportunities for local adults in the hopes of finding a few people who want to join our orchestra or band as a percussionist.
Since then, our percussionists have made huge strides in progress as they have each applied enormous amounts of effort to try to address all the requirements of the orchestral sheet music put in front of them! We have the added support and tutelage of Richard J. Scarff, who currently teaches percussion, drumkit, and piano at Bennett Memorial School Tunbridge Wells and Bronte School in Gravesend.
For more information about past events and activities from our percussion project, take a look at our blogposts.
If you are interested in joining our percussion group as an amateur or complete beginner, please get in touch via our contact form -- we would love to hear from you!
