North Downs Community Orchestra will be staging their next Concert - ‘From Mozart to the Sound of Music’ - at the Bawtree Concert Hall, Hazelwood School, Limpsfield at 7.30 pm on Sunday 2 December.
Formed of local amateur musicians and conducted by Shona Fenion, their repertoire consists of not just the classics, but also film and show music. As well as movements from Mozart’s 40th Symphony and Rossini’s Barber of Seville the Concert will include the famous tunes from The Sound of Music, James Bond and Star Wars films.
Bearing in mind the recent tributes to those who lost their lives in the Great War, the NDCO will play a haunting piece, The Banks of Green Willow, by George Butterworth. His famous piece was premiered in 1914 with no less than Adrian Boult conducting his first professional concert. Two years later, having won the Military Cross for bravery, George Butterworth was killed in the Battle of the Somme, with no known grave.
The Banks of Green Willow has several fine solo melodies that will be played by Orchestra members Harriet Leach (flute), Amelia Dyson and Tamsin Erwood (oboes), Libby Nichols (bassoon) and Melanie Lee and Dave Ellis (clarinets).
Tickets for the Concert are available from NDCO members or on the door, price £5, Under-18s free. There is plenty of free parking at Hazelwood School, Wolf’s Hill, Limpsfield, RH8 0QU, and refreshments will be served.
