BAWTREE HALL, June 15, 2025 – the magic of Hollywood came alive at Bawtree Hall as the North Downs Community Orchestra (NDCO) presented its enchanting "At the Movies" concert. Under the dynamic baton of conductor Anna Maria Tabor, in what was only her second concert with the orchestra, the ensemble delivered a captivating performance that transported an enthusiastic audience straight to the silver screen.
Anna skilfully guided the orchestra through a diverse program of iconic film scores, enhancing the experience by sharing fascinating anecdotes and background information about the movies from which the pieces originated.
The program featured beloved classics such as "The Pink Panther," "The Blue Danube Waltz," and a vibrant selection from "Moana." This last piece, notably written by Lin-Manuel Miranda before his widespread fame with Hamilton, showcased a different aspect of his incredible talent. A highlight of the afternoon was undoubtedly the interactive rendition of "The Sound of Music," where audience members were provided with lyrics, creating a joyful sing-along that resonated throughout the hall.
Adding a special touch to the performance was the orchestra's patron, renowned comedian and musician, Rainer Hersch, who joined the viola section for the concert. Following the performance, Rainer expressed his delight, stating it was a "lovely concert" and that "the audience got a treat and clearly loved it" high praise indeed.
The orchestra's hard work and dedication were evident in their precise and heartfelt delivery of each piece. Their cohesive sound truly brought these well-known movie themes to life, creating a memorable experience for the visibly engaged audience, a mix of members' families and friends, who offered warm applause and participated enthusiastically during the sing-along.
As the concert drew to a close, heartfelt gratitude was extended to the orchestra's dedicated Chair, Pam Deverill, who is set to step down in September. Pam has been a foundational pillar since the orchestra's inception, tirelessly working behind the scenes, navigating various obstacles, and ensuring the orchestra's continued success and growth. Her commitment has been invaluable.
Looking ahead, the orchestra invites all to save the date for their next concert on Sunday, 2 November 2025, at Caterham School. Another memorable musical journey is surely in store. Please keep an eye on NDCO website www.thefunorchestra.co.uk and NDCO Facebook page for any updates.
